The HeartWise Workplace Pulse

A friendly look, one question at a time, at how your team or organisation is growing in six areas. You get what is already strong, the HeartWise step that fits best, and one small first step to try.

  • 16 short statements
  • A few minutes
  • Six areas
  • Answers stay in your browser
  • No right or wrong

Take it together: read each statement aloud and answer as a team.

This is a conversation starter built from your own answers. It is not a test, a diagnosis or a score of worth. There is no pass or fail.

Ready when you are

Start with one question about who you are answering for

Then sixteen statements in six short chapters. Choose how often each one is true most of the time, not how you wish it was.

The Pulse is a conversation starter for a team. Looking for something more personal? The Compass is a personal reflection (12 statements). Want a plan for your people? The Culture Check-up has 16 statements.

How it works

Three gentle steps, one garden

  1. 1

Say who you are answering for

A single team, a department or the whole organisation. This question is not scored. It helps us suggest the right size of next step.

  2. 2

    Answer sixteen statements

One at a time, with four steps: Not yet, Sometimes, Often, Almost always. Your garden grows a little as you go.

  3. 3

    Read your garden

Your strongest roots first, then the HeartWise programme that fits, what to do next in the two areas with most room to grow, and free things to start with.

Six areas

What the Pulse looks at

Each area is shown as a plant at one of three stages. Different worlds, one team: it asks about shared habits and agreements, never about any one person or generation.

  • Focus and energyWhether people can concentrate on one thing, whether the team has agreements that protect attention, and whether the pace leaves room to recover.3 statements
  • Feelings and emotional skillsWhether people can name feelings, pause when overwhelmed, and pause before reacting to others.3 statements
  • Working together and repairWhether people disagree respectfully, mend clashes and mistakes, and keep their agreements.3 statements
  • Generations and mentoringWhether colleagues of different ages and backgrounds learn from each other, and whether everyone has someone to learn from and someone to help.2 statements
  • Home-work balance and healthy habitsWhether the working rhythm respects people’s time outside work, and whether people can look after sleep, breaks and movement without judgement. (It asks about the organisation’s norms, never about anyone’s private life.)2 statements
  • Belonging and stayingWhether people feel they belong, whether newcomers are welcomed, and whether people can see a way to grow.3 statements

Answer each with Not yet, Sometimes, Often or Almost always.

Domain 1. Focus and energy

  1. In our team, people can usually give their full attention to one thing at a time.
  2. We have shared agreements about messages, notifications and meetings, and we keep them.
  3. The pace of work leaves people room to rest and recover, so most people have the energy to do good work.

Domain 2. Feelings and emotional skills

  1. People can say how they are feeling at work in simple words (for example happy, sad, angry, scared or tired).
  2. When someone is wobbly or overwhelmed, they can take a pause and come back steadily.
  3. Before reacting to a colleague, people usually stop to ask what might be going on for them.

Domain 3. Working together and repair

  1. We can disagree openly and respectfully.
  2. When there is a clash or a mistake, we talk about it and mend it instead of letting it sit.
  3. Agreements made in our team are kept, and when they are not, we say so kindly and deal with it.

Domain 4. Generations and mentoring

  1. Colleagues of different ages and backgrounds ask each other questions and learn from one another.
  2. Everyone here has someone to learn from, and someone they help.

Domain 5. Home-work balance and healthy habits

  1. Our working rhythm respects people’s time outside work (messages, hours and rest).
  2. People feel able to look after healthy habits such as sleep, breaks and movement without being judged.

Domain 6. Belonging and staying

  1. People feel they belong here and that their voice counts.
  2. Newer colleagues feel welcomed and know who to ask.
  3. People can see a way to learn and grow here.
An honest note

A conversation tool, not a measurement

This Pulse is a conversation tool made of plain statements. It has not yet been tested for reliability or validity, it has no norms, and it makes no comparison between organisations. Its results should not be described as a measurement of an organisation’s quality.

Every statement is worded positively, so answers can lean agreeable. Try answering for what happens on most days.

HeartWise Workplace draws on published research. See what the research says, with every source named.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Who should answer?

A leader, or a small group of colleagues, thinking about the team, the department or the whole organisation. You can answer on your own, or take it together: read each statement aloud and answer as a team.

Is this a test?

This is a conversation starter built from your own answers. It is not a test, a diagnosis or a score of worth. There is no pass or fail.

Where do my answers go?

Your answers stay in your browser, on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you choose “Email me my Pulse”; then we receive your result and the details you type into that form. You can also print or save your result. Read our Privacy page.

What if I am unsure about a statement?

Choose the step that fits most days. “Not yet” is a perfectly good answer: it keeps the HeartWise spirit of “yet”, because nothing here is fixed.

What do I get at the end?

A garden of your six areas, shown as Seed, Sprout or Strong tree; your strongest roots first; the HeartWise programme that fits best; and, for the two areas with most room to grow, what you need next and one small first step.
